It will be crushed by the Feds if they can find it.

There used to be one by me when I lived in a different part of Portland. It had Mexican plates. Currently there is a car parked in front of my house with Mexican plates, a Chevy Corsa "Comfort Edition" (definitely not 25 years old). This one has been parked for at least four or five months and I wonder what is going to happen to it. I mean supposedly you can't drive it, but obviously if you drive from a country where it is registered you should be able to keep driving it. For instance, they don't take my car away and crush it in Canada because I have Oregon plates...

I guess this is where the term "grey" market comes in.

Such forbidden fruit. Ugh. Apparently 1997 was the first model year. A few more years...

Why on Earth would someone import a Mercedes A-Class?

Yep, if he gets anywhere near a Us Customs POA, Airports that kind of thing. It will be crushed.

I do wonder, if I registered a Gtr or something along those lines in Canada. Then bring it to the Usa and keep it there, if it would be legal.

At borders, there are plenty of Seat, Renault, cars coming into the Us temporarily.

How would you go about insuring this?

There's some random non DOT cars in Southern California. I've seen an Alfa Spider before around Irvine. In metallic puke, like this one.

Didn't they screw up the first year of this model? Supposedly it could roll over in a moose test or the engine -sliding-under-the car in a collision technology wasn't perfected or something...

And they had to recall/stop making it for two years until they fixed it.

That is my A160. It is a great car to own, but it will not be going near a US border anytime soon.

The process to register it in the US with a valid US title was amazingly easy. You need to have residence (or parents with residence) in a friendly state.

Stated value policy. My insurance company (one of the big names) took the VIN, vehicle description, and asked me what the 'value was'. They added it to a existing car policy I have and poof, it is insured.

Pay attention to the plates. My A160 wore diplomatic plates for years until I bought it.

I know the owner, he was strangely besotted with the A class after a stint in London driving EasyRentacar's around. I tried so hard to talk him out of this purchase but he went ahead anyway. I drove it, it was as horrible as you might imaging although the clutchless manual actually seems to work just fine.

Is a clutchless manual like a DSG you manually shift? H-pattern or +/-?

It was a standard manual transmission shifter with a H pattern but just no clutch. Like the Saab Sensonic system but this one still seemed to work just fine.

I think I've seen your car around! Do you happen to stay around the Potrero area in SF?
